ALTP Project for Eliminating Human Trafficking Through Grassroots Sensitization

 Eliminating Human Trafficking

Project Overview

Welfare of Children and Youth Association (WCYA) received a European Union funding through Expertise France to implement a nine months’ project aimed at fighting against human trafficking and irregular migration. The project, which lasted from February to October 2023 was implemented in collaboration with the Centre for Initiative Against Human Trafficking (CIAHT) with support from relevant government institutions such as the Ghana Police Service, the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection.

The objective was to create a sustainable multi-dimensional awareness approach/platform that contributes to increased human trafficking awareness and change in behaviour at the community level in Ghana, targeting 32,000 vulnerable people.

Together, the team conducted sensitization in 20 communities in four regions of Ghana namely Greater Accra, Central, Volta and Northern Regions. The project took place in 16 districts, with the objective to introduce the ALTP Project for eliminating human trafficking through grassroots sensitization. Both formal and informal stakeholders were engaged and briefed on the project’s goals and their specific responsibilities.

A total of 890 individuals participated in the project, including 231 formal stakeholders (148 males, 83 females) and 659 informal stakeholders (420 males and 239 females).

Key Activities & Achievements

Community Sensitization

We conducted awareness campaigns in 20 communities across four regions of Ghana: Greater Accra, Central, Volta, and Northern Regions. Our efforts spanned 16 districts, introducing the ALTP Project for eliminating human trafficking through grassroots sensitization. This has resulted in heightened awareness regarding the dangers of human trafficking and behavioral transformations among vulnerable groups.

Stakeholder Engagement

Both formal and informal stakeholders were engaged and briefed on the project’s goals and their specific responsibilities. A total of 890 individuals participated, including 231 formal stakeholders (148 males, 83 females) and 659 informal stakeholders (420 males and 239 females). Stakeholders expressed their commitment to collaborate for effective implementation and supervision of the project.

Community Child Protection Committees

Seven new Community Child Protection Committees have been formed and sworn in to work in various communities to help in the fight against human trafficking. These committees play a crucial role in monitoring and reporting potential trafficking cases at the local level.

Economic Empowerment

The project has supported 29 vulnerable individuals at risk of exploitation with seed capital and training on how to manage their businesses. This economic empowerment initiative helps reduce vulnerability to trafficking by providing sustainable livelihood options.

Training for Travel & Tour Agencies

WCYA collaborated with the Human Trafficking Secretariat of the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection to organize training for 63 travel and tour agencies who recruit people to the Gulf States for work. Topics discussed included the nature, causes, and consequences of human trafficking in the tourism industry and among recruitment agencies. This training equipped agencies with knowledge and skills to identify indicators of human trafficking and respond appropriately.
